Resources Summary

Audio and video are used far less frequently on the Web than in CD-ROM-style multimedia applications. They are the forgotten elements of the Web, but they have the potential to breathe life into static pages. Audio and video put the "multi" in multimedia, yet the vast majority of Web pages today don't offer sounds or video images. Critics argue that audio and video files are simply too large for the benefits that they add to a Web page.

But as multimedia-equipped computers and higher bandwidth connections become more commonplace, expect to see a higher percentage of pages that feature audio and video content.

Digital Asset Management Tools

Used as a competitive lever, digital assets can help accelerate business processes and knowledge transfer. Selecting appropriate digital asset management tools is critical to enable the control of a range of data types and business functions.

Operational Components of Digital Media Asset Management

We believe companies should base the selection of their digital asset management solutions first on the types of digital assets required (e.g., if images are the only assets to be managed, an image management solution will suffice). However, if companies foresee the dynamics of their digital assets evolving, the solution should be evaluated in terms of its ability to address some or all of the following capabilities:

Editorial Processes

Here, the content and the structure for books, magazines, newspapers, encyclopedias, multimedia titles, etc. will be created, and external contributions will be integrated within the framework of controlled and manageable workflow processes.

Digital Asset Purchasing

This facilitates the process of searching for assets beyond established archives. The acquisition of new assets should be handled to enable appropriate licensing and contracting. Aspects of copyright management should also be addressed within this function.

Digital Asset Management

Focus should be on the specific electronic archive of the different types of assets and the associated information in the form of a multimedia database addressing the filing, structuring, search/retrieval, and administrative functions of a hybrid object/relational database.

Content Capture (Image/Text)

This component will be responsible for the scanning of incoming paper - both text and images.

Content Capture (Audio/Video)

This aspect handles the creation of the digital versions of incoming audio and video assets: compression, editing, etc.

Content Creation

Digital asset management systems should be able to interface with multimedia authoring and "liveweb" development tools.

Document Composition

The composition of the product to be created (books, newspapers, audio-CD, CD-ROM, etc.) from the various assets falls into this category, as does the product "layout."

Output/ Publishing

Preparation for the final production of the product must enable an interface to external modules such as printers and CD mastering systems.

Graphic/Image Manipulation This component handles the altering and manipulation of images and graphics.
Asset Trading

The potential to offer asset access to other companies will be handled by this component. The aim is to trade directly without using asset agencies, offering easy access to individual authors or photographers, agencies, and other users.

Intellectual Property Control

Enables rights assignments and royalty tracking/ payments.

Distribution (Print) Interfaces with printers.
Distribution (Network) Interfaces with networks

Bottom Line

Driven by increased demand for media-enabled applications, companies are placing greater importance on the value of their digital assets. Solutions enabling the management and control of digital assets are improving; however, product selection should be predicated on a flexible data type management model.

To accelerate knowledge transfer to partners and customers and thereby shorten business/process cycle times, exploit the compelling presentation and data visualization capabilities of digital assets at ISS.
